Kent State alumna Tessa Reeves doesn’t have to travel across the world to help refugee families who have fled cultural persecution. She’s created meaningful work for some of them right in their Akron resettlement area—and she plans to expand the business. “I’ve missed them so much,” says Tessa Reeves, B.S. ’13, heading to the door to greet three employees of her small clothing company, Neighbors Apparel, with hugs.

Taylor Yarborough, a junior fashion merchandising major, wears her hair many ways — along with wearing her hair natural, she has worn wigs, weaves and braids. L.O.C.K.S. seeks to unify African students
The League of Conscious Knowledge Seekers (L.O.C.K.S.) brought self-proclaimed "Prince of Pan-Africanism" Umar Johnson to speak at the Kiva on Monday, but the controversy surrounding the speaker had little to do with the message the organization is spreading on campus. “Johnson was not here to talk about his opinions on women or gay people,” said junior entrepreneurship major John Jones.

In September, senior April Goss kicked the extra point in Kent State’s win against Delaware State—and made history. As only the second female ever to score a point in a Division One game, Goss landed a spot in every local media outlet, as well as national coverage on the “Today Show” and a story in Shape magazine.

A new Culinary Passport program encourages students to go on a culinary adventure by attending themed events where they can enjoy special entrées created by the executive chefs.

Fact and Fiction
Three new student clubs help fans of fiction have fun and focus on real-world issues. Purpose: Members participate in Dagorhir, a sport/battle game that combines full-contact combat simulation (using foam-padded weapons) with live action role playing, inspired by medieval history and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Currently a senior magazine student at Kent State University, I look forward to a career in the magazine and journalism industry.

I am the editorial intern for Kent State magazine, where I write, edit and research stories. I have been involved in all aspects of the magazine process, from interviewing sources to attending press checks.

I served as a diversity reporter for the campus magazine, The Kent Stater, and will take on a position as a features reporter as well.

I enjoy writing about a wide variety of topics, and love to present stories in new and creative ways.
